The Story Menu

Pick 4 words from the menu and build a story together where all 4 must appear.

Ages 5–1010–20 min2–6 kidsHousehold items

Each person picks 4 words or phrases from the menu. Any words: 'grilled', 'garden', 'special', 'tiramisu.' Then go around the table building a story one sentence at a time, where each sentence must include at least one of the speaker's words. The menu constraint prevents blank-page paralysis and makes the story unpredictable. A collaborative story that must include 'tiramisu', 'garden', 'stone-baked', and 'lovingly prepared' goes somewhere nobody planned.

What you need

  • The menu

How to do it

  1. 1Hand them the menu and say: "Pick four words — any words. We're going to build a story together and you have to use them."
  2. 2Build a story together, one sentence per person. Each sentence must use at least one of your words.
  3. 3Keep going until the food arrives or the story finds its own end.

Variations

  • If they freeze on their turn: you supply a sentence using their word to keep the story moving, then pass it back.
  • How it ends: 'to be continued' when the food lands — the story stops mid-thread instead of being wrapped up, which is its own kind of ending.

💡 Parent tip

Pick unusual words, not just dish names: 'rustic', 'signature', 'stone-baked', 'lovingly prepared.' Abstract menu language is funnier and more generative than specific dishes.

What your child develops

  • Constrained narrativeusing a required word within a sentence forces creative problem-solving that pure open-ended storytelling doesn't
  • Collaborative authorshipbuilding on someone else's plot direction requires listening and continuity
  • Vocabulary absorptionmenu language (grilled, seasonal, reduction, rustic) gets absorbed through use
