The Shoulder Shake

Shake out both shoulders five times, then both hands. Together, no explanation needed.

Ages 5–91 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

When the child arrives: 'Shake it out. Shoulders. Five times. Then hands.' Do it with them. 15 seconds. This is a rapid proprioceptive reset that releases the chronic tension children carry from sustained desk-sitting and from the physical suppression of movement required by school. It doesn't need to make sense to the child. It just needs to happen, the same way every day.

How to do it

  1. 1'Shake it out. Shoulders, five times. Then your hands.' Do it alongside them.
  2. 2Make it physical and genuine. If you watch, it's an instruction; if you do it, it's a ritual.
  3. 3Then proceed. It doesn't need to make sense. It just needs to happen.

Variations

  • If they refuse the shake — do it yourself, exaggerated, until they join. Compliance usually follows genuine, full-bodied effort.
  • How it ends: after the hand shake, no commentary. Move directly to snack or next activity. The ritual is complete.

💡 Parent tip

Go fully into it. Exaggerated, genuine shaking. If you do it half-heartedly, the child mirrors the hesitation.
