The Shake-Out Run

One lap around the house as fast as possible before anyone says a word about school.

Ages 5–103–8 min1–3 kidsHousehold items

When the child arrives home with too much energy to sit: one lap around the outside of the house, or to the end of the street and back, as fast as possible. No questions about school until after the run. The physical discharge takes under three minutes and changes the quality of the entire after-school period. The run is not a consequence — it is a transition.

How to do it

  1. 1Before shoes are off, before bags are down: 'One lap. Go.'
  2. 2Child runs one circuit — outside or to the end of the street and back. Fast.
  3. 3Inside, everything proceeds as normal. No debriefing the run.
  4. 4No school questions until they bring it up themselves.

Variations

  • If they refuse the run, don't chase it. The ritual only works when it's expected and accepted. Try again tomorrow.
  • They come back inside. Everything proceeds as normal. No commentary on the run itself.

💡 Parent tip

The run works best as a consistent ritual, not a spontaneous suggestion. When it's expected — 'this is just what we do when we get home' — it costs no negotiation energy. A child who resists it usually needs it most.

What your child develops

  • Cortisol regulationbrief high-intensity movement after sustained school stress reduces circulating cortisol measurably
  • Physical dischargepen-up movement energy from hours of desk work is a real physiological need, not a behaviour problem
  • Transition rituala consistent physical action signals the boundary between school mode and home mode

Safety notes

  • Ensure the route is safe for the child to run independently at their age.
