The Private Notebook

What you need

• Paper and stapler (parent assembles one booklet per child)
• Pencil and colored pencils per child

How to do it

1. 1Fold and staple five to eight sheets of paper per child into booklets.
2. 2Hand one to each with drawing and writing tools.
3. 3This is your book. No one reads it unless you want them to.
4. 4Leave them to it. Private objects do their own work.

Variations

• If one refuses to start: sit down with your own blank notebook and start filling a page — working alongside them, not instructing, usually gets them writing.
• How it ends: ask if either wants to read one page aloud — never require it, the privacy is the point.
• This one needs pre-made booklets, so it's for a calm stretch, not an active fight. Use The Separate Reset (B006-20) for that.

What your child develops

• Narrative construction — a book with pages invites story structure even when no story was planned
• Ownership through creation — a private artifact reduces external conflict by providing something unambiguously one's own
• Extended independent focus — the physical completeness of a book sustains engagement longer than a loose sheet

Safety notes

• Pre-staple the booklets yourself. Check for sharp staple edges on the spine.
