The Photo Mission

Older child is the photographer and director; younger child is the star.

Ages 2–1215–30 min2 kidsHousehold items

Older child gets a phone camera (if allowed) or a paper viewfinder. A card with a rectangle cut out. Mission: take 10 photographs of the younger sibling doing 10 different things. The younger child tries different poses, movements, or expressions on the photographer's direction. The older child has full creative control. The younger child is the subject and star. Both roles are genuine; neither is the babysitter.

What you need

  • Phone camera (if allowed) OR card with a rectangle cut out as a viewfinder

How to do it

  1. 1Hand the older child the camera, or cut a rectangle in cardboard for a viewfinder.
  2. 2The mission: ten photographs of the younger sibling doing ten different things. You're the director.
  3. 3Older child calls each pose or action. Younger child performs on request.
  4. 4Look through the results together. Let the photographer say which ones worked.

Variations

  • If the younger one refuses to perform for the camera: let the older one photograph objects and pets first while the younger watches how it works, then invite them in.
  • How it ends: look through all ten photos together and let the photographer pick their favorite three.
  • This one builds cooperation before it's needed. For an active fight, use The Separate Reset (B006-20) instead.

💡 Parent tip

If no camera is available, the paper viewfinder works completely. The older child holds it up, calls out what they'd take a picture of, and 'clicks' with a finger. The mime version is as effective at creating the role structure as a real device.

What your child develops

  • Directorial thinkingthe older child must translate a visual idea into a clear instruction
  • Performance and responsivenessyounger child practices following creative direction
  • Shared creative outputthe photographs belong to both children in genuinely different ways

Safety notes

  • Set clear phone rules in advance if using a real device. The viewfinder alternative avoids screen access entirely.
