The Morning Wiggle

Thirty seconds of full-body shaking before anyone asks for anything, and the room changes.

Ages 2–82–8 min1–3 kidsHousehold items

Before the routine demands begin, 30 seconds of deliberate full-body shaking or wiggling. Arms, legs, head, everything. This is physiologically activating and immediately funny. The child who is hunched and unresponsive is often just in a low-arousal state. The wiggle interrupts it with no conflict.

How to do it

  1. 1Before the routine begins: 'Thirty seconds of wiggling. Ready? Go.'
  2. 2You wiggle too — full commitment. Silly is the mechanism here, not the side effect.
  3. 3Set a timer for 30 seconds.
  4. 4When it ends: 'Done. Now we're awake.' The room will have changed.

Variations

  • If they won't join in: keep wiggling solo and get sillier, not more insistent — most kids can't stay still and watch for long.
  • How it ends: let the timer be the one that stops it — 'Timer says done, now we're awake' — so the fun ends on the clock's authority, not yours.

💡 Parent tip

You have to actually wiggle. An adult who stands still and watches a child wiggle alone is issuing a performance command. The shared silliness is the point.

What your child develops

  • Physiological activationmovement raises cortisol and core temperature, the body's natural wake signals
  • Mood shift through laughterabsurdity interrupts sullen morning states more reliably than instructions
  • Shared experiencedoing it together builds goodwill before the harder asks come

Safety notes

  • Clear space around both participants before starting.
