The Freeze

Everyone freeze. Don't move. I'm counting to 10.

Ages 3–101–2 min2–5 kidsHousehold items

One loud, calm word — Freeze — and everyone stops moving, including the parent. Hold for ten seconds, then resume at normal volume. The physical pause interrupts the escalation cycle before it reaches a point neither child can step back from. Children in conflict are usually moving faster than their words; the freeze gives the body a moment to catch up.

How to do it

  1. 1"At the peak moment: Freeze. Everyone. You freeze too."
  2. 2Count to ten silently or aloud. It doesn't matter.
  3. 3On ten: okay.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they don't freeze, repeat the word once — "Freeze" — with the same calm tone. Most children respond to a second call.
  • Ausstieg: After the ten count, say only: "Okay." No explanation, no lecture. The pause was the whole point. Move on to something different.

💡 Parent tip

Use it before the conflict peaks, not after. A freeze works at raised voices. It doesn't work at full meltdown. The earlier the call, the more effective the pause.

What your child develops

  • Escalation interruptionphysical stillness produces a measurable drop in arousal within 5–10 seconds
  • Co-regulationa parent who also freezes demonstrates that the pause applies to everyone, not just the children
  • Pattern interruptionthe same pattern (freeze, count, reset) applied consistently becomes a known de-escalation tool
