The Countdown to Vertical

Count down from 10. At zero, the only ask is sitting up.

Ages 3–91–3 min1 kidsHousehold items

A countdown from 10 to 0 with one small, achievable goal: sitting up. Not standing. Not dressed. Just sitting. The countdown replaces the repeated verbal demand with a predictable structure. Sitting up is easy enough that most children comply without a fight.

How to do it

  1. 1"We're doing the countdown. At zero: sitting up. 10... 9... 8..."
  2. 2Count slowly. One beat between each number. Let it feel inevitable.
  3. 3At zero: "Sitting up." Move to the next thing without waiting.
  4. 4The goal stays exactly that small. Sitting up only.

Variations

  • If zero comes and nothing moves, don't recount louder — lie down next to them and start your own countdown instead: "Okay, I'll go first. 10... 9..." Most kids sit up just to see what you're doing.
  • The moment they're sitting: "There you are" and turn straight into the next task — no comment on how long it took, no countdown for what comes next.

💡 Parent tip

Don't escalate the goal mid-countdown. Sitting up only. Counting to 'fully dressed' fails every time.
