Ten Jumping Jacks

Ten jumping jacks in the kitchen before breakfast. Parent included. Non-negotiable.

Ages 3–121–2 min2–5 kidsHousehold items

Ten jumping jacks in the kitchen before breakfast, parent included. Under thirty seconds of movement produces a measurable shift in alertness and mood. A child told to exercise and a child doing jumping jacks alongside a parent are in entirely different situations. The shared physicality turns a morning routine into a family ritual that children look forward to.

How to do it

  1. 1"Ten jumping jacks. Everyone. Go."
  2. 2Do them together in the kitchen or wherever you are. Parent included.
  3. 3Count aloud. On ten: done. Morning continues as normal.
  4. 4On Mondays, make it twenty. Some rituals are allowed to grow.

Variations

  • Refuses to jump or says no: you do ten solo, full commitment, no commentary. A kid watching a parent do ten enthusiastic jumping jacks almost always joins by count seven.
  • Everyone's done: count off and name it — "Done, body's awake, let's go" — no lingering or explaining. The jacks speak for themselves.

💡 Parent tip

Do it in pyjamas if needed. The physical state matters; the outfit doesn't. The fact that you do it in your pyjamas alongside them is, if anything, better.

  • Shared morning momenta brief silly shared activity is a low-cost connection that sets a positive morning tone

Safety notes
