The Floor is Lava

Three words and a rainy afternoon transforms into a living room adventure.

Ages 3–915–35 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Say 'the floor is lava.' That's all. The furniture becomes an obstacle course with real stakes. They'll argue about the rules within five minutes which means they've taken over the game and you're free.

How to do it

  1. 1Say: 'The floor is lava.' No further explanation needed.
  2. 2Navigate from the door to the sofa to the hallway without touching the floor.
  3. 3Rules will emerge on their own: certain furniture runs too hot, time limits, no repeating a route.
  4. 4When they start arguing about the rules, you're done. The game belongs to them now.

Variations

  • If they refuse to play, silently start hopping between cushions yourself, wobbling like you're 'nearly falling in' — most kids can't stay lava-immune for long once it looks funny.
  • Declare the lava is cooling — count down from ten together, and once you hit zero the floor is safe again and everyone collapses onto it.

💡 Parent tip

The game is most absorbing when they make the rules. By minute five they'll have a full rulebook you had nothing to do with. That's when you can leave the room.

  • Self-generated rule creationchildren who build the rules are more invested than children who follow yours

Safety notes

  • Remove fragile items from jumping surfaces. Supervise children under 4 near anything more than 50 cm off the floor.
