The Eyes-Closed Drawing

Draw something specific with your eyes closed. Open, look at the disaster, laugh, try again.

Ages 4–1015–30 min1 kidsHousehold items

Draw a house, an animal, a face, a bicycle with eyes fully closed. Open and look. Try again with the same subject. The humor of the result. A face with both eyes on the chin, a bicycle where the wheels are on top. Is intrinsically satisfying. Children request round after round without any encouragement. Works lying down with a clipboard. Low effort, high entertainment. And the laughter itself is worth doing: it's one of the few genuine physical benefits available on a sick day.

What you need

  • Paper on a clipboard or hardback book
  • Pencil

How to do it

  1. 1Hand over a clipboard with paper and a pencil. Draw a house. Eyes fully closed the whole time.
  2. 2They open their eyes, see it, and laugh. That's not the reward — that's the whole activity.
  3. 3Suggest the same subject again. Then a face. Then a bicycle. The worse the result, the better.

Variations

  • If they refuse to close their eyes: hold a book up so they can't see the page instead — same effect, less demand.
  • How it ends: after the funniest one, say 'let's frame this one' and stop there — ending on the best result, not the last one.

💡 Parent tip

Suggest subjects with enough parts to go entertainingly wrong: 'draw a bicycle', 'draw a person eating soup', 'draw our apartment building.' Simple shapes are too forgiving. The humor lives in complex subjects.

What your child develops

  • Spatial memorydrawing without visual feedback requires recalling how an object looks from memory rather than copying it
  • Self-directed humorthe child produces something funny through their own effort, which is different in quality from watching something funny
  • Frustration tolerancefailure is built into the activity, normalizing imperfect results in a context with no stakes
