A specific engineering challenge: build a bridge spanning the gap between two chairs that holds a stuffed animal. Children are assigned complementary roles. One handles the supports (verticals and anchors), one handles the deck (the horizontal span). The bridge only stands if both roles are executed. The shared goal absorbs the conflict energy into a joint engineering problem that neither child can solve without the other.
What you need
- Blocks, LEGO, cardboard strips, or recycled boxes
- Two chairs or two stacks of books
- One stuffed animal as the test load
How to do it
- 1Two chairs, facing each other, with a gap between them.
- 2One child handles supports. The other handles the deck. Assign it before they can argue.
- 3Build a bridge that holds this. Name the stuffed animal. The goal is real.
- 4Test it together. If it fails, both redesign.
Variations
- If one refuses to build: start your own half out loud — "I wonder if this side needs a support here" — narrating usually pulls a reluctant kid in without asking them directly.
- How it ends: once the stuffed animal crosses safely, retire the bridge to a shelf as a monument instead of tearing it down.
- This one builds cooperation before it's needed. For an active fight, use The Separate Reset (B006-20) instead.
💡 Parent tip
Let it fail without intervening. The first attempt almost always collapses, and the redesign conversation is where the real cooperation happens. A structurally perfect bridge built with parental advice teaches nothing about working together.

Safety notes
