Shadow Race

Whose shadow animal can run the fastest across the wall? Race your shadows.

Ages 2–1010–25 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Use a wall and a single light source. Children make hand shadow puppets. Then race: whose shadow-animal runs the fastest across the wall? Whose can jump highest? Combines fast arm movement with creative competition.

What you need

  • light source (torch or window light)

How to do it

  1. 1"Find a light and a white wall. We're making shadow animals. Show me a dog using your fist and thumb."
  2. 2Make a shadow dog with your fist, thumb up. That is your racer.
  3. 3Race your shadow animals across the wall. Whose crosses in fewer moves?
  4. 4Cooperative round: build a shadow landscape together using everyone's hands at once.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they can't make the shape, show them first and let them copy your hand position exactly before they try alone.
  • Ausstieg: After one race, announce: "Make your biggest animal ever using two hands," then watch and praise the results.

💡 Parent tip

The further the hand from the wall, the larger and blurrier the shadow. The closer, the sharper but smaller. Children discover this themselves within 2 minutes.

What your child develops
