Palm Drawing

Close your eyes while someone draws on your palm with one finger — identify it in three guesses.

Ages 4–1210–25 min2–3 kidsHousehold items

One player closes their eyes and holds out a palm. The other traces a shape or letter slowly with one fingertip. Three guesses to identify it. Draw clearly and switch after every five drawings. Quiet, requires nothing, works in any back seat.

How to do it

  1. 1One player closes their eyes and holds out an open palm. The other draws with one fingertip.
  2. 2Start with simple shapes: circle, triangle, number. Three guesses to identify it.
  3. 3Progress to letters, then words written slowly, then small pictures.
  4. 4Switch drawer and guesser every five drawings. Quiet, no setup, works anywhere.

Variations

  • If they won't close their eyes, let them peek slightly — the tactile sensation still works even with visual input.
  • How it ends: after five drawings, switch roles naturally — don't announce a winner, just trade places.

💡 Parent tip

Draw slowly. The most common error is drawing too fast, which gives the receiver only a blur of sensation. One deliberate stroke at a time — lifting the finger between strokes — is easier to read and more satisfying when identified correctly.

What your child develops

  • Tactile spatial processingtranslating physical sensation into a visualised shape is a distinct cognitive skill
  • Letter-body mappingconnecting a letter to its drawn shape reinforces letter recognition through a non-visual channel
  • Perspective-takingthe drawer must think about how the receiver experiences each stroke
