Newspaper Fashion Show

Two sheets of newspaper, some tape, 10 minutes. Make something to wear on the runway.

Ages 4–1215–35 min1–6 kidsHousehold items

Each child gets 2 sheets of newspaper and a short strip of tape. They have 10 minutes to make a wearable item: a hat, a cape, a skirt, a crown. Then a fashion show. Tearing, folding, and sculpting newspaper at speed is genuinely physical.

What you need

  • newspaper (2 sheets per child)
  • tape

How to do it

  1. 1"Two pieces of newspaper. A small piece of tape. Ten minutes. Make something you can wear. Ready? Timer starts now."
  2. 2Give each child two sheets of newspaper and a thirty-centimetre strip of tape. Ten-minute timer.
  3. 3The rule: make something you can wear. Anything — but it must go on the body.
  4. 4Fashion show: each child walks to the end of the hall, turns, and announces what they made.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If someone is stuck, don't show them how. Instead: "What do you think you could wrap that around? Your head? Your arm?" — questions, not answers.
  • Ausstieg: Vote on fun categories (most surprising, most gigantic) and declare everyone winners of something. Then have them remove everything and sit down.

💡 Parent tip

Do not show them how to make anything before the timer starts. The constraint of figuring it out themselves is the entire point.

What your child develops

  • Spatial reasoningconstructing a 3D wearable object from a flat material under constraint
  • Creative confidencemaking something performative that will be seen and judged
  • Fine motor under time pressuretearing and folding newspaper precisely while racing the clock

Safety notes

  • Newspaper edges can be sharp when tearing at speed.
