Reframe the start of the routine as a mission debrief. Parent is command centre. Child is the field agent delivering their daily report. They talk while brushing teeth, getting changed, settling into bed. The debrief happens through the routine, not as a delay to it.
How to do it
- 1"Agent [Name], I need your full debrief before lights out."
- 2Ask for three things: one good thing today, one hard thing, one thing to look forward to tomorrow.
- 3Child delivers the report while the routine happens — brushing, changing, settling in.
- 4Close with: 'Report received. Mission complete.' Then lights out.
Variations
- **Korb-Tür:** If they refuse the debrief: "Okay, silent mission. No report needed. Just finish the routine." Drop the frame but keep the momentum.
- **Ausstieg:** Close with "Report received. Mission complete." Lights out immediately. The mission is over.
💡 Parent tip
The reframe works because it shifts from 'do what I say' to 'I need something from you.' Agency is preserved while the routine still happens.
What your child develops
- Emotional processing — naming and externalising the day's events before sleep
- Reflective thinking — categorising experiences as good or hard
- Smooth transition — child is occupied with the debrief, not resistant to the routine
