Make Me Laugh

Two players face each other, both must keep a straight face — no touching, no props, just willpower.

Ages 3–125–15 min2–4 kidsHousehold items

Two players face each other. No touching, no props — only faces, sounds, and words. Each tries to make the other smile or laugh first. Play best of five. Deliberately holding a straight face under pressure is more demanding than it sounds.

How to do it

  1. 1Two players face each other. On go, the first to smile, smirk, or look away loses the round.
  2. 2No touching. Sounds and words are allowed. Faces are the main weapon.
  3. 3Play best of five. Rotate challengers for a full tournament.
  4. 4Holding a straight face under pressure is harder than it sounds. That is the whole game.

Variations

  • If they can't hold a straight face, make it silly instead — see who can make the silliest face first — changes the goal.
  • How it ends: after one round, move on — don't play best-of-five if energy is low.

💡 Parent tip

Actually try. Children immediately detect half-hearted effort and lose interest. When you hold a genuine straight face and they can't crack it, their intensity triples. The game is only good when both sides are actually competing.

What your child develops

  • Emotional self-regulationsuppressing a spontaneous physical response requires conscious control
  • Social sensitivityreading when the other person is about to crack requires fine attention to micro-expressions
  • Mutual delightshared laughter at the moment of losing is a genuine connection moment
