Living Room Olympics

Five events, a homemade scoreboard, and a cardboard medal ceremony. This runs itself.

Ages 4–1025–50 min2–4 kids

Design five indoor events together, compete in each, keep score, hold a ceremony. The Olympics format makes everything feel official. The self-designed events create ownership. The ceremony gives the whole session a real close.

What you need

  • tape
  • paper for scorecards
  • cardboard and marker for medals (optional)

How to do it

  1. 1Design five events together that work indoors: a distance challenge, a balance event, a throwing event, a speed event, a stacking challenge.
  2. 2Everyone competes in each event. Record scores on paper. First, second, third — or points out of ten.
  3. 3Add up totals after all five. The margin rarely matters as much as the ceremony.
  4. 4Award a cardboard medal. Play the anthem on your phone. Do it properly.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they're resistant to planning events, suggest your own terrible event idea — the silliness of it usually gets them laughing and creating better ones.
  • Ausstieg: Hold the medal ceremony exactly as planned, playing an anthem and reading their name for each placement.

💡 Parent tip

Let them design the events, not you. The ownership of the format is what creates buy-in for the whole session. A child who invented the long-jump event will try ten times harder at it.

What your child develops

  • Sportsmanshipwinning and losing within a shared agreed structure
  • Creative event designinventing challenges that are fair and measurable
  • Sustained engagement through progressive structurethe ceremony creates a real goal to work toward

Safety notes

  • Adapt events for the space — no sprinting in small rooms.
