Egg Drop Test

Build a container to protect a raw egg from a 1-metre drop. Using only what's in the kitchen drawer.

Ages 5–1220–40 min1–3 kids

Classic engineering challenge adapted for the kitchen. Supply cotton wool, a ziplock bag, rubber bands, a small box. Child has 15 minutes to build a protective container for a raw egg. Then drop it from 1 metre. Did it survive?

What you need

  • raw egg
  • cotton wool or sponge
  • bubble wrap
  • small box
  • rubber bands

How to do it

  1. 1Say: "We're building a protection capsule for an egg. Your job is to make sure it survives a one-metre drop."
  2. 2Child builds alone. You can answer questions about available materials. Nothing else.
  3. 3Drop from exactly 1 metre onto a hard floor. Open the container and look.
  4. 4If it broke: why? What would they change? Offer 5 minutes to rebuild.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they won't build: show them the materials falling to the floor. "How would you stop this?" Let them watch destruction first.
  • Ausstieg: Whether it breaks or survives, open it and look together. "What do you think happened inside?"

💡 Parent tip

If it breaks, do not suggest improvements. Ask 'What do you think went wrong?' Most children immediately know and rebuild more effectively without any input.
