Plain yogurt mixed with a drop of food colouring in a few small bowls. Child finger-paints on a tray or paper with completely edible 'paint.' Built specifically for children who still explore the world by putting things in their mouth.
What you need
- plain yogurt
- food colouring
- small bowls
- tray or large sheet of paper
How to do it
- 1Split yogurt into 2-3 bowls, stir in one drop of colouring per bowl: 'Watch it turn blue!'
- 2Dip a finger in together first: 'Feel how cold and smooth this is.'
- 3Let them paint the tray or paper however they want - swirls, handprints, dots.
- 4Mixing colours is allowed and expected - a brown-grey mess at the end means it worked.
Variations
- If they only want to eat it rather than paint with it - that's a completely fine outcome for this activity. Let a spoon and one bowl be 'the tasting bowl' separate from 'the painting bowl.'
- 'One last handprint, then bath time.' A full handprint on the paper as the finishing move gives a clear, satisfying end point.
💡 Parent tip
Use a high chair tray or an outdoor table for this one - the cleanup is genuinely easy, but only if the mess is contained somewhere washable from the start.
What your child develops
- Sensory exploration without risk - texture, temperature, and colour experienced through touch and taste at once, with zero safety concern
- Fine motor practice - spreading, dabbing, and dragging with fingers refines hand control
- Colour recognition - naming the colour as it's mixed anchors the word to a direct sensory experience
Safety notes
- Check for dairy allergies before use. Fine for mouthing and tasting - this is the whole point of the activity.
