Cloud Safari

The best after-school decompression tool needs no setup, no words, and no screens. Just the sky.

Ages 3–1010–30 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Children often come home from school in a state researchers call 'restraint collapse'. Emotionally spent from holding it together all day. Lying on your back and looking at clouds is one of the gentlest resets available. No demands. No questions. Just up.

How to do it

  1. 1Go outside and lie down on the grass, or lean back against a wall and look straight up.
  2. 2Start gently: 'I see a cloud that looks like a sleeping bear. What do you see?'
  3. 3Don't push for an answer. Let silences happen. They're part of the reset.
  4. 4Stay until it feels done. There's no right amount of time.

Variations

  • If they keep talking or asking questions, gently: 'Cloud time is quiet time. Let's just look.' The silence is the point.
  • When it feels finished — usually 10–15 minutes — suggest: 'One more cloud, then we head in.' Close it deliberately.

💡 Parent tip

This only works if you stop asking questions. 'What did you do at school today?' kills it instantly. Just look up together and let the silence be.
